Free up disk space using OneDrive Files On-Demand

Lets OneDrive keep the index of all your files but only download what you actually open.

  1. Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray → Settings.
  2. Go to the Sync and backup tab → Advanced settings → Files On-Demand → Free up disk space.
  3. Or, in File Explorer, right-click a folder you don’t need offline → “Free up space”.
  4. Files become “cloud-only” (blue cloud icon) — you can still see them; they download when opened.
  5. To always keep something offline: right-click the file → “Always keep on this device”.

Still stuck after those?

You’ve done the right thing by trying. Send whedo.it a quick note — what you tried, what you saw — and a senior pair of eyes will be on it the same business day.
